What is BPH?

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) is an enlarged prostate. It occurs very frequently (affecting 50% of men over 60). It is not cancer. It can cause slow urinary flow and make you go to the toilet frequently overnight. It can consequently cause tiredness and affect your work and sex life. The cause is not fully understood but it continues to develop with age.

Treatments for BPH

Men are often started on tablets for BPH. These can have side effects – including dizziness and affecting sexual function. There are a variety of operations for BPH. The conventional operation is TURP (transurethral resection of the prostate). This is an established treatment which is very effective but men need to stay in hospital for two or three days and take things quite carefully for the next month while they recover.

Rezum

Rezum (prostate steam treatment - water vapour therapy) is a minimally invasive treatment for BPH. It uses natural energy stored in a few drops of steam to shrink the prostate and relieve blockage due to BPH. Men choose Rezum because they do not want to take BPH medication indefinitely but also wish to avoid side effects and disruption associated with more invasive treatments.

The top floor of the striking Garrett Anderson Centre contains the operating theatres and wards for patients undergoing elective / planned day surgery. The four operating theatres are brimming with surgical technology including a sophisticated ceiling-mounted operating microscope and dedicated children's surgery theatres. Patients have their own beds in individual cubicles on wards immediately adjacent to the operating theatres and recovery area. There is a separate children's ward.
