Vasectomy Reversal

Mr Yardy performs vasectomy reversal using an operating microscope to join the cut vasa (tubes) using a multilayer anastomosis (joining of tubes) as this technique has the highest success rate. The procedure is performed under general anaesthetic and patients go home the same day.

Success rates are influenced by the time interval between vasectomy and reversal and the female partner's age and fertility. Alternatives include sperm retrieval for assisted reproduction techniques (ART) such as ICSI. Sperm can be retrieved from the testis during the vasectomy reversal to be stored for subsequent ART –andrologists from Cambridge IVF work with Mr Yardy when this is required.

For men who have had a vasectomy and wish to have further children, the advantages of vasectomy over ART include the opportunity to conceive more naturally and a lower cost than a single cycle of IVF / ICSI. Mr Yardy can discuss the relative merits of these treatments and also manages couples affected with male factor infertility of other causes.

Why all vasectomy reversals are not the same

Mr Yardy uses an operating microscope. The extra magnification allows him to use finer instruments and sutures to join the cut ends of the vas back together more accurately, resulting in a better success rate. Many surgeons still use loupes (glasses with magnifying lenses attached) which just do not allow for such intricate surgery.

We use a very modern ceiling-mounted Carl Zeiss operating microscope. Just check the microscopes other surgeons are standing next to in pictures on their websites. Does it look like the old microscope that the local Ear, Nose and Throat surgeon had left over when he got a new one?

Training – Mr Yardy is an established microsurgeon who was originally trained in this procedure by a plastic surgeon and other high volume vasectomy reversal urologists. He also has significant experience in paediatric surgery (regularly operating on children from the age of 1) and is hence very familiar with delicate intricate surgical techniques. He is an active member of the British Fertility Society.

Mr Yardy usually performs a continuous anastomosis – the first layer of the join between the two cut ends of the vas uses a single fine stitch looped back and forth between the two ends rather than multiple separate short sutures. This produces a neater join which is less likely to leak.

The proceedure was carried out on my Grandson who needed to be circumcised due to medical reasons. He was treated with great understanding [George is 12] and information on the operation was explained in a clear manner. George had every confidence that this was going to be a safe and necessary.

Mr Yardy and his colleague did a great job of putting me at ease before the start of the procedure. He indicated what the experience would be like in realistic terms but not such as would cause anxiety. The start of the procedure was as described. The view from the cystoscope on screen was mesmerising. Mr Yardy gave a commentary as he proceeded which was most helpful. There were a few twinges of discomfort but nothing severe. After the procedure we had a full and very helpful discussion about options and homed in on what I think is the best course of action for me.
