George Yardy was born and brought up in Cambridgeshire. He attended St George’s Hospital Medical School, London. His early surgical training included placements as a junior doctor in General Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Trauma & Orthopaedics, and Obstetrics & Gynaecology.
George Yardy undertook laboratory research into genetics of prostate cancer at the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine, John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford. His supervisor was Professor Sir Walter Bodmer. His thesis was submitted to the University of London and he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Medicine (M.D.), for which his London Adviser was Roger Kirby.
George Yardy completed the higher surgical training programme in urology in the East of England region, including two years each in Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, and the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital. In the final year he underwent further training in Moscow and Hamburg.
George Yardy was appointed as a Consultant at the Ipswich Hospital in 2012. He has established a broad practice in urology and, since then, has introduced new treatments to the East Suffolk area including: outpatient bladder Botox injections under local anaesthetic, microsurgical vasectomy reversal, minimally invasive prostate treatments (Urolift and Rezum), rectal spacer insertion to decrease side effects from radiotherapy for prostate cancer.
BPH – George Yardy offers a variety of treatments for urinary problems in men, including medications, conventional surgery and newer minimally invasive alternatives. So, in contrast to some other Urologists who favour and promote one particular procedure, he is able to discuss the relative merits of transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), laser surgery (HoLEP), bladder neck incision, Urolift, Rezum (prostate steam treatment / water vapour therapy), and prostate artery embolisation to help you decide the most appropriate treatment for you, considering your symptoms, prostate size and shape, and other medical conditions.
Prostate cancer – George Yardy is experienced in assessment of men with raised PSA or symptoms suggestive of prostate cancer. He works with uro-radiologists and offers multiparametric MRI scanning of the prostate and “fusion” transperineal prostate biopsy. He has a multidisciplinary approach to treatment – radiotherapy, hormonal treatment and chemotherapy are offered to suitable patients working in conjunction with specialist oncologists. “Rectal spacer gel” including SpaceOAR and Barrigel is available to decrease the side effects of radiotherapy.
Female bladder problems – treating incontinence, overactive bladder, urinary tract infection / cystitis, bladder pain syndrome; working with specialist nurses, physiotherapists, community continence service.
Paediatric urology – surgery for foreskin problems, undescended testis, hernia, or hydrocoele.
Teaching – As a Senior Lecturer at the University of East Anglia, George Yardy has regular commitments teaching medical students. He is the Assigned Educational Supervisor for junior doctors in urology at Ipswich.
